Sporting Andalucia

Surfs Up

The Atlantic coast of Spain is a magnet for sports' enthusiasts, and the beaches of Isla Canela are the perfect place for kitesurfers and windsurfers. The highly prized beaches provide an ideal sheltered location for people learning to kitesurf and windsurf - but with the dependable afternoon Atlantic winds they are also regularly used by expert kitesurfers for instruction, and for their own enjoyment. The area also boasts a number of 'Blue Flag' marinas, which cater for expert mariners with boats available for hire, as well as the novice who will be able to take lessons from one of the sailing schools located here. There are several wind and kitesufing schools on the beach during the months of July and August, with lifeboats at hand.

It is also possible to hire boats. It is helpful if you have some experience, as well as navigation licences for larger sailing and motor boats.

Andalucia for golfers

If your sporting tastes are more land-based, there is still plenty for you to do. There is no better climate in Europe for the keen golfer; within easy reach of Isla Canela there are no fewer than 17 golf courses, not counting any you may find if you cross the border into Portugal. No wonder this part of Atlantic Andalucia is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative to the well-trodden tour routes of the Costa del Sol.

Isla Canela Golf offers18-holes, sensitively built amongst the Marismas del Guadiana. The result is a stunning course with spacious teeing areas, reputed to be amongst the most beautiful in Spain; there are no artificial elements, the design making the most of the natural features and topography of its surroundings. For the novice, or for experienced players who wish to improve their game, there is a permanent golf school run by professional PGA instructors.

A little further along the coast you will find the resort area of Islantilla, with its international standard 27-hole course which has previously been the venue for the PGA Spanish Open and has also been selected by both the Danish and Swedish PGA Golf Unions as their winter training home.

Bowling in Andalucia

The Bowls Club at Isla Canela is reputed to be one of the most beautiful in Spain, sensitively built amongst the 'Marismas del Guadiana' (the salt marshes of the Guadiana estuary). There are two bowling greens, both suitable for tournament play; one is of natural grass constructed to specifications approved by the English Bowling Federation, the other having a top quality artificial surface. There can't be many Greens in the world where you will play alongside areas teeming with herons and flamingos!

Other Activities ?

The activities we have looked at so far are only a fraction of what is available to you. In addition there are plenty of tennis courts, bicycle hire is easy, there are a number of established walking/trekking routes and there are also stables from which horses can be hired.
